Calculating 2020 Mortality Rates in Sweden

In this post, I will show how to calculate mortality rates in Sweden in 2020. All information is from the Statistics Sweden at the population statistics page.

Step 1 — Get Deaths

Towards the top of the page will be a link to an excel file (clicking the link starts a download) that gets updated every Monday.

Use the second sheet in the excel workbook to calculate the number of deaths by age group for each year. Data is provided for each day with one additional row for deaths at an unknown dates. Summing up the given age groups per year gets the following table.

Step 2 — Get Population

Scroll down to the Number of Inhabitants section and click on Population per month by region, age and sex. Year 2000M01–2020M11 (last updated in January, 2021).

The query tool is quite good and allows you to select specific sub-groups.
