This is a great piece and really speaks to the massive inadequacy of Twitter as a forum for nuanced opinion. Twitter is like walking in a minefield of ravenous baboons just waiting to build fleets of strawmen for the slightest perceived misstep. Engaging the strawmen-building baboon mob, regardless of how painfully nuanced you try to be, rarely gets the message across, and generally only lands you in another minefield of ever more ravenous baboons.
The entire exercise of entertaining a Twitter discussion filled with strawmen is one of the worst way to spend one’s time and very bad for mental health. Blog posts, traditional forums, and better yet, speaking with individuals outside of the internet produce better discussions, far better than anything I have ever had on Twitter.
